Installing and using multiple operating systems.

As printed in the advisor | Additional information

If you are like most computer users, you haven't even thought about having more than one operating system on your computer. There are many advantages to do so. For example you are still running Windows 98 on your computer and you would like to upgrade to Windows XP. To make the transition as smooth as possible your want to start using Windows XP right away but also be able to go back to your old Windows 98 installation. Or you are happy with your computer right now but you would like to try Linux as well as Windows. The magic word is multiboot. On a multiboot computer you have all the operating systems, you would like to have, installed and decide on startup which one to use. This is not as hard as it seems, if you know how to install an operating system like Windows. If not you can have it done by a professional and enjoy the benefits. First you need a separate partition on your harddrive (or a separate harddrive) for each operating system you want to install. Then install your Windows starting with the oldest version and going to the newest. The last step is installing Linux, if you choose to do so. I have had computers with Windows 98, Windows XP and Linux installed and working. In this case I defined Windows XP as default. So every time I start the computer Windows XP starts automatically and only occasionally I choose something else manually.
If you are really serious about multiple operating systems on one computer and you want to run them all at the same time there is a program called Virtual PC. Virtual PC lets you install and run multiple DOS, Windows, OS/2, Linux, etc. systems simultaneously on one computer. You can copy and paste between systems, share folders and switch from one OS to the next by the push of a button.
